How To Warm the Heart of a KJ

When I host a show, it’s all about making sure the singers have a good time. But as the KJ, I have a good time, too, even though I’m “at work.” What makes Karaoke Annie feel so good? Glad you asked!

  1. Your smile. A happy singer tops my feel-good list every time. If you and your friends are enjoying yourselves, it validates all the dollars and hours that I spent to build the show. And who doesn’t love being surrounded by smiling faces?
  2. Your thanks. Whether you express your appreciation with a kind word, a tip, a “like” or photo-share on Facebook, or a return visit, I get the message and I’m grateful.
  3. Your respect. When you applaud for a singer like you mean it, even when they’re not strong on talent, it makes their day—and mine. I also notice and appreciate when you treat my equipment (i.e. the microphone) and songbooks with respect, and when you return my pens and pencils instead of keeping them.
Of course I’m glad you come to karaoke night even if you don’t want to sing, because we need applauders as much as we need singers—and it’s nice to have a full house. I’m glad you choose to spend your hard-earned cash on food and drinks and tips for the wait staff as well as for your karaoke host, when you could be staying home or going to the movies.

But trust me, karaoke really IS all about YOU, and YOU are the one who makes it all worthwhile for me just by leaving all your cares at the door and taking part in a night of joyful noise. So thank you, thank you, thank you! And come again soon!

El lo mejor sábado de karaoke en SMA es en La Vecindad

Jason from Austin, TX, at La Vecindad.

Of all the karaoke venues in San Miguel de Allende, I'm partial to La Vecindad because it's most like family. It's comfortable. It's casual. And people really listen when you get up to sing.

La Vecindad features David Cruz at the turntable (okay, CD+G player) and wife Sarah and son Christian on stage beside him. The family feeling starts there.

Roy Soltero & friend.
It took some time and a change of ownership to work out the kinks in the remodeled venue with its new big-screen TV and super-charged sound system, but now the glitches don't happen very often and the price of a beer is still among the lowest in town.

La Vecindad has karaoke shows on Friday and Saturday nights, 9:30pm-1:00am, and if you're desperate to sing on other nights, you can request the microphone for the jukebox—they've got a few karaoke tunes in there. I like to bring my own karaoke CDs (CD+Gs) because a few of my favorite songs aren't on the list.

Call me if you want to go, and I can bring songs for you!

La Vecindad is on the Salida a Celaya, between Longhorn Smokehouse and Mega Comercial, but on the opposite side of the road. It is next to the big car wash that is for sale. See you there!

Karaoke Friday, Oct. 1, at Blue Iguana

Last Friday night we had so much fun that we're doing it again this Friday!

Come start your weekend with great food, home made root beer or home brewed beer, and karaoke at the Blue Iguana, just 1km past Fábrica Aurora on the Carratera a Dolores.

We've got tunes from the '30s and '40s, all the way to this year's top hits! Choose Broadway tunes, jazz standards, or rock from the '50s, '60s, '70s and '80s. Songs for kids, too!

Come for the food...stay for the music! Karaoke starts at 8:30pm. For more information and reservations, call the Blue Iguana at 154-7888.
